NEWS COMES FROM THE MIDDLE EAST RECENTLY



Hamas leader Khaled Meshall called upon Palestinians to unite in third intifada against Israel, in an interview for Al-Jazeera Television Broadcasted. The first Palestinian intifada began in 1987 and the second in 2000 after peace talks failed. Israeli warplanes continued pounding The Hamas-Ruled Gaza strip, killing at least 229 people according to reports in one of the bloodiest days for The Palestinians in 60 years of conflict with The Jewish State.

Hamas vowed revenge, including suicide bomb attacts in the "cafes and streets" of Israel, as Israeli air strikes continued late into the night. Israel said the offensive would continue as long as necessary and that it may also involve land forces. Israel had reinforced its infantry and armoured forced along The Gaza Border hours after Israel's aerial bombardment had begun.

Israel said the strikes were in response to almost daily "intolerable" rocket and mortar fire by Gaza militans, which intensified after Hamas ended a six-month

The White House said Bush, who is on vacation at his Texas ranch, was briefed on The Israeli air strikes on Gaza by his national security adviser Stephen Hadley and spoke by telephone with Rice. Israel says the offensive was in response to rocket salvoes by Gaza militants that intensified after Hamas ended a six-month-old ceasefire a week ago. One Israeli man was killed by rocket fire on Saturday but injuries on The Israeli side have generally been rare.

Israeli Arabs and Palestinians in The West Bank took to the streets to protest Israel's attack on The Hamas-Run Gaza strip that killed at least 205. In The Israeli Arab town of Nazareth, thousands took to the streets in protest against the deadly attack. Men marched through the streets to protest Gaza violence. In The Israeli city of Tel Aviv, Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said that The Jewish state was only defending its citizens....sound bite....

Palestinian sources report that in Israel's attack, the deadliest in the past 20 years, some 205 people were killed and hundreds more were wounded. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said that The Gaza opersation may take time but vowed to prevent a humanitarian crisis in The Hamas-controlled territory.

While Olmert delivered his speech, scores of left wing Israelis scuffled with police during a demonstration calling on Israel to stop attacks on Gaza. Demonstrators marched chanting through the streets of Tel Aviv towards Olmert's offices when some of them began scuffling with policemen. At least one protester was detained by police.

A five-day Israeli offensive in March killed more than 120 people but Saturday's death toll was the highest for a single day in The Israeli-Palestinian conflict since 1948 when The Jewish State was established. Olmert who will leave office after the February election has repeatedly said Israel does not want to re-occupy Gaza from which it withdrew ground forces and settlers in 2005.

White house spokesman Gordon Johndroe said Hamas must cease rocket attacks into Israel for the violence to stop. The Bush Administration has typically taken the
