CHINA-ICE FESTIVAL

China's wintery town of Yanqing on Friday is celebrating the coldest time of the year with a prosperity-themed ice festival. Hundreds of ice sculptures featuring traditional Chinese building are on display in the town, which is in The Northwestern part of greater Beijing.

For locals the glittering ice sculptures are the traditional way are marking the upcoming Chinese new year on January 26Th. all the ice was taken from a river in the area. The colourful lights attracted many people from around Beijing who wanted to "chill out" from the stresses of city life.

The theme of this year's ice festival is to showcase a prosperous and harmonious China, which has seen its economy slow down as the global financial crisis deepened. No one here wants to put prosperity on ice. Last year's festival featured the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The town also holds an ice lantern festivalevery year.
