Toluca became the third most successful soccer club in Mexico after winning its ninth title after beating Cruz Azul 7-6 on penalties in the championship final Apertura 2008, after an aggregate score of 2-3.

The Diablos Rojos ( Red Devils) of Toluca came in third position behind Guadalajara and Ameica, who hold 11 and 10 titles respectively, as the clubs who have won the most titles inn Mexico. In spite of Toluca losing at home by 2-0, the aggregate score forced the game to go into penalties where Toluca became champions with a favourable score of 7-6.

At night, the winning team celebrated by touring Toluca city on board a bus, while thousands of spectator waving the characteristic red club shirts with red painted faces, cheered ecstatically. The fans, covered in foam, jumped and shouted "devil, devils" and "nine trophies, we have nine trophies," as the bus drove past. The "Maquina celecte" (the celestial machine) of cruz azul arrived at the defining game with a disadvantage of 2-0 in the away game and got off to a good start to make up for the disadvantage.
